resell rights, master resell rights, and private label rights explained

If you're thinking about getting into the world of digital products, you need to know about the different type of rights that come with the products you purchase, and the rights that you will include with digital products you plan to sell (or resell) on your own online store or online marketplace.

But first, lets make sure you know the abbreviations...

  • RR - resell rights

  • MRR - master resell rights

  • PLR - private label rights

Now let's break them down. 👇

3 types of resell rights for digital products

Resell Rights (RR rights)

What are resell rights, or RR rights?

Resell rights have the most restrictions of the three. When you buy a product with RR, you gain the right to resell the product to the end user. You do NOT gain the ability to change it in any way. You are NOT allowed to claim authorship or copyright to the product.

You are only selling the item to the end user for them to use the product themselves. They are NOT granted any rights to resell the item to others.

In addition, you as the person who has purchased the item does NOT have the right to offer anyone else the ability to sell that product.

In layman's terms, you can only sell the product you bought as-is for people to use, not sell.

What are the pros of RR

  • You do not need to spend any time changing the digital product, as you are not allowed to modify the item

What are the cons of RR

  • You must make sure that the item you are purchasing to resell yourself has enough end user interest to be profitable.

  • Since you are not selling the ability to sell the product being bought, you will likely need to price your product a little lower.

How to determine if I should buy and sell digital products with resell rights

  • If you're looking for a quick way to start selling digital products and don't want to spend time creating your own nor editing those you purchase, finding digital products with RR rights is the way to go

Master Resell Rights (MRR rights)

What are master resell rights, or MRR rights?

Master resell rights are the middle-ground of the three types of digital products rights.

WIth MRR products, they are similar to RR in that you cannot change the product, you cannot claim authorship, and you cannot claim copyright to the product.

The difference to RR products is that with MRR, you can resell rights to the product, which means that you can buy a product, then resell it to others who then can also resell it themselves.

In layman's terms, you can sell the product you bought as-is for others to resell as-is.

What are the pros of MRR

  • Because you can sell resell rights with the product, you can price the item a little higher than if you are selling the product for individual use. Why? Because there is more value-add to the products with the rights to resell it.

What are the cons of MRR

  • You are not able to customize the product to your liking or branding. It must be sold as-is when you purchase it.

How to determine if I should buy and sell digital products with master resell rights

  • If you're looking for a way to encourage others to begin selling digital products, you will at a minimum need to sell products with MRR rights, or create your own digital products and include at least MRR rights.

Private Label Rights (PLR rights)

What are private label rights, or PLR rights?

When you purchase a product that is labeled PLR or private label rights, you can treat the product as if you created it yourself. You DO have the ability to put your own name on it as if you created it.

You can sell resell right or master resell rights to the product.

You can sell the products as-is or you can edit them however you like - including adding in your own comments, rewriting or redesigning parts, or going as far as rewriting or redesigning the whole thing.

You can NOT claim copyright to the product.

Two things to keep in mind with PLR products:

  1. Not everyone's definition of PLR rights are exactly the same. Make sure that you read the specifications of the rights you're buying from the particular company selling PLR rights with their products. You must comply to their specifications.

  2. If you significantly modify the original product, it in essence becomes a new product, which then in turn means that you can claim copyright to the new product.

What are the pros of PLR

  • you can customize the product you bought to your liking, then resell it with or without RR or MRR rights

What are the cons of PLR

  • if you plan to make updates, it will take longer to get the products listed on your website or online marketplace

  • the price of PLR products will likely be higher than the other two types since you are being provided with more rights

How to determine if I should buy and sell digital products with private label rights

  • if you want to be able to control the overall design or text of the item you are selling, but would like a starting point, you should consider buying PLR products.
